Make (Lots of) Space for Play

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

“Play is the work of childhood.”- Jean Piaget

Don’t minimize the value or importance of play! It is essential to kids’ well being and fosters development of:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Socialization and social skills

  • Cognitive development

  • Creativity

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Self-competence

  • Self-confidence

  • Autonomy

  • Resilience

And don’t feel like you need to micromanage play. Give kids the space to figure it out on their own. There may be times where a little structure or support can be helpful but unless there is an urgent safety issue, count slowly to 10 before you jump in and see if they can first figure it out on their own. Oftentimes, you may be pleasantly surprised.
